NHS Digital has launched a new campaign for staff to support cyber security in the workplace.
The campaign, named Keep I.T. Confidential aims to generate awareness and educate staff across the NHS on the impact of data security on patient safety and care. The campaign has been created to support a culture of cyber security throughout the NHS and for organisations to run their own campaigns locally.
Some of the messaging focuses on actions staff can take to improve weak passwords and password theft, phishing emails, unlocked screens and services and social engineering to manipulate people into divulging confidential or personal information.
Rob Shaw, Deputy Chief Executive of NHS Digital, said “Cyber security is the responsibility of all NHS staff and we want to inspire a cultural change by supporting health and care organisations to embed it in their daily best practice.”
“To do this, we need to support all NHS staff on the direct impact of data security on patient care, and the steps they can take personally to reduce this threat.”
“We know how busy NHS staff are so we are helping them to understand the importance of data security and how it can impact on and benefit their working lives, including patient care.”
“NHS organisations are vast and diverse so Keep I.T. Confidential can be tailored to suit the individual needs of health and care providers and their staff.”

Virtual data assistant in BETA
NHS Digital has also launched in BETA a virtual data assistant (ViDA), a new interactive tool you can ‘chat’ to. It can help you find published NHS Digital data, and answer questions about our data and information processes
The chat bot can be used to ask questions such as data NHS Digital published, health statistics and indicators and the process for accessing data.
For example, you can ask questions like “can you show me data about A&E waiting times?” or “what is a data access request?”.
View the virtual assistant here.
If the tool is successful NHS Digital will look to launch and roll-out the tool.
