University Hospitals of Leicester NHS goes live with patient administration system

Earlier this week, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust went live with their first-of-type patient administration system, which was built with EPR provider, Nervecentre.

The PAS was developed to replace the trust’s 35-year-old system and is said to “unlock real benefits for patients, supporting safer and more seamless care”, while also setting “the foundation for a truly integrated electronic patient record” across the region. After months of planning and preparation, the trust took to LinkedIn to report “over 50 million data items were migrated with zero loss” during the go-live process.

On a separate LinkedIn post from Will Monaghan, group chief digital information officer at University Hospitals of Leicester, the trust began the implementation on the evening of Friday 20 July, with a technical go-live achieved by 15:45 the next day. He shared, “ED colleagues had Nervecentre back by 16:30, and after hundreds of staff worked through the night transferring paper records into the live system, we declared full operational go-live at 04:00 Sunday morning.”

Also commenting on the go-live, Nervecentre added: “The PAS is an integral part of the Nervecentre EPR, bringing everything together in one place. We have witnessed a smooth transition across UHL’s hospitals, which are among the biggest and busiest in the country. Clinical and administrative staff rapidly adopted the new digital administrative workflows that will save time and reduce the volume of paper used each day.”

Nervecentre deployments across health and care

We recently caught up with Will Monaghan to discuss some of the trust’s latest projects, ongoing priorities, and work on AI. He also shared insights into their work with Nervecentre and his thoughts prior to the go-live.

On 28 June, there’s a planned go-live for the Nervecentre EPR within Northampton General Hospital. It will replace the organisation’s current mix of paper and digital systems, complementing the Northamptonshire Care Record as a way of supporting more joined-up care across the region.

One of our recent features from Nervecentre looks at breaking down barriers within the NHS and enabling collaboration across pathways through digital transformation. It explores moving beyond legacy systems, presenting their vision for the future of care and how their EPR solution can help to improve efficiency and put patients at the heart of every decision.

In March, University Hospitals of Derby and Burton and Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trusts introduced Nervecentre’s cloud–native EPR platform. It was launched across six hospitals in a phased roll-out, with this phase focusing on deploying mobile capabilities to the hospitals’ emergency departments and inpatient wards.
