Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust has shared details of its planned go-live of the Epic EPR, marking another step toward realising the ambitions of the One Devon EPR programme.
The go-live is planned for 3 April 2026, integrating “hundreds” of systems previously in use across the the trust into a single electronic system. Alongside the EPR, Torbay and South Devon is launching the MY CARE patient portal, offering patients visibility of their medical information, clinical interactions, and appointment details.
Collaboration and learning from the experience of Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, already live with the Epic system, has reportedly helped ensure “safe delivery”.
Adel Jones, the trust’s COO and deputy chief executive, commented: “I am incredibly proud of our teams and our partners who have worked extremely hard to get this fantastic new system live. Over the coming weeks and months, I am confident we will begin to see the full benefits of Epic realised for patients and staff.”
The next important date for the One Devon EPR programme is 23 July 2026, with go-live at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust marking “one single electronic patient record system for staff in multiple hospital and community sites across Devon”.
Adrian Harris, CMO (Digital and Research) for Royal Devon and SRO for the One Devon EPR programme said: “This is quite simply one of the biggest changes to health care in Devon in a generation. The introduction of a single EPR across the county will see many benefits for years to come as more comprehensive data, provided in real-time, will support the delivery of improved patient outcomes, higher quality research and advanced service planning.”
Wider trend: EPR
With the help of a panel of experts from across the health sector, HTN recently took a deep dive into EPRs, looking at approaches to implementation, lessons learned, challenges, and future directions. Panellists included Ian Mackenzie, CIO at Surrey and Borders Partnership; Ciara Moore, EPR operations director at Bath, Salisbury and Great Western Group; Keltie Jamieson, CIO at Bermuda Hospitals Board; and Michael Hardman, practice lead for software development at Aire Logic. A medium term plan for North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust has shared details of digital plans and priorities for the next five years, with focuses on the shift from analogue to digital, and ambitions for EPR transformation, single patient record, digitising pathways, and scaling digital innovation. On EPR transformation, the trust refers to the scheduled go-live of the ORBIS U EPR in 2026/27, and ambitions to build on this with the wider adoption and embedding of digital solutions supporting productivity, safety, and clinical decision-making. Tools such as ambient voice technology that are already in use at the trust will also be scaled.
Stockport NHS Foundation Trust and Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trusts have awarded 10-year EPR contracts to Altera Digital Health, to replace multiple siloed legacy systems. Noting the EPR implementation as a “huge programme of work”, the director for informatics for both involved trusts, Peter Nuttall, highlighted the benefits of a strong digital foundation for future care delivery and innovation, adding: “It’s a defining moment for both organisations, which is why we’re excited to get underway and provide clinical teams with up-to-date patient information at their fingertips so they can deliver quality care.”
