Microsoft has developed a range of adaptive accessories designed to support people with disabilities in using computers with more ease and efficiency.
The products were envisioned by John Hermes, an industrial designer at Microsoft, who brought the idea for an adaptable mouse to Microsoft’s annual innovation event for employees after realising that his daughter struggled to control the mouse on her school computer due to her cerebral palsy. A prototype was built at the event by attaching a Microsoft Arc mouse to a 3D-printed piece designed for finger support and control, which helped to reduce unwanted clicks.
The wireless accessories can replace or augment a traditional mouse and keyboard for users with limited mobility or anyone who wants to use a computer more efficiently. The mouse and button can be further customised through 3D-printed attachments from the company Shapeways.
Microsoft calls this development “part of a long-term focus to make more inclusive technology”, and shares how they have partnered with Shapeways to make 3D-printed adaptive grips so that users can customise their Microsoft Business Pen and Classroom Pen 2.
Gabi Michel, Director of Accessible Accessories at Microsoft, said: “The Microsoft Adaptive Accessories are intended to remove the barriers that traditional mice and keyboards may present to people with limited mobility. No two people are alike, and empowering people to configure their own system that works for them was definitely the goal.”
Mandy Pursley, a graphic designer and voiceover artist born without a right hand and forearm, has used the adaptive products to “work faster and with less shoulder pain”. Having recently timed herself working with the adaptive button, Mandy found that she could work 30 percent faster. “This is going to make such a huge difference for so many people,” she said. “People with disabilities already have a lot of creativity and resourcefulness because we have to learn how to function in the world and adapt to technology. Having technology that actually adapts to us is just going to take our productivity up to the next level.”
