Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals appoints new chief digital transformation officer

Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) has announced the appointment of its new chief digital transformation officer on an interim basis, with David Newey joining the team.

David brings with him experience from his role as chief information officer at the Royal Marsden, where he was involved in the introduction of the Epic EPR last spring, and also the launch of the Royal Marsden’s research and treatment facility Oak Cancer Centre.

Chief executive Matthew Trainer commented that he is “delighted to have someone with David’s experience to help improve our organisation and make it fit for the 21st century.” Referring to the trust’s transformation programme as a “major undertaking”, he added: “I’m grateful that David will help us learn from others, so we can make a success of our digital transformation.”

Another workforce update sees Sarah Jensen, chief information officer at Barts Health, taking on the same role with Barking, Havering and Redbridge as part of an ongoing collaboration aiming to help BHRUT benefit from their knowledge and experiences. BHRUT is to implement the same EPR as Bart’s Health (Oracle Health Millennium) so that the clinical teams can access the records of a patient visiting any of BHRUT’s seven hospitals or Barts Health.

Speaking on this development, Sarah highlighted that the relevant teams at the two trusts “have spent more than two years working collaboratively. I look forward to this partnership delivering for staff and for residents across north east London.”

Earlier this year David joined HTN for a panel discussion focusing on the future of the chief information officer role, looking at the role of the CIO at developing digital maturity and skills, across an integrated system, and more. Catch up on what he had to say here along with CIOs from Hampshire Hospitals, University Hospitals of Derby and Burton, and Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust.

We also interviewed David about his experiences rolling out the Royal Marsden EPR, where he shared insights into the procurement, timeline, staff engagement and more, sharing his key lessons and advice.
