Airedale NHS Foundation Trust has gone live with TPP’s e-observations to digitise how staff enter observation data at a patient’s bedside.
The Trust’s staff can now enter this information using tablet devices when they need to and it provides a tool to capture observations and measure Physiological Early Warning Scores, empowering them to respond to these, or escalate to senior or specialist colleagues.
Following a successful trial on the Trust’s orthopaedic ward, the system is being rolled out across other inpatient wards.
Project Lead Nurse Richard Rees-Jones said of the rollout: “The trial period on the orthopaedic ward went well despite it taking place during a busy winter period. This enabled us to iron out a few snags and we feel confident about taking it live.”
“This is an ongoing collaborative and iterative process with TPP to develop a system integrated within the patient’s SystmOne record, influenced by the Trust’s clinical input to drive the requirements of the system.”
“The initial rollout involves 13 adult inpatient units using the National Early Warning Score (version 2): we continue to work with TPP on preparing to rollout Escalation Notifications, Neurological Observations, PAWS (Children), MEOWS (Maternity) and NEWTT (Newborn), and report on data from eObs to drive quality care for our patients. This will put approximately 160 tablet devices active in patient care areas.”
“We’re already seeing benefits such as improved visibility of NEWS scores, timely observations for patients, reduction in use of paper and improved staff morale”.
TPP Clinical Director Dr John Parry stated that “eObs going live is the result of hard work and collaboration from both the Trust and TPP. By implementing this mobile solution, which works both offline and online, we are building and using technology that will aid the delivery of care. This improvement will ultimately bring benefit to patients – which is the key shared goal between TPP and Airedale.”
