OpenAI has introduced EHR and public data integration into ChatGPT for Healthcare, said to enable AI-assisted workflows and provide clinical teams with a variety of patient information, context, and insights from public health sources.
The EHR integration is capable of bringing authorised patient information from Epic into ChatGPT for Healthcare, OpenAI states, whilst the Healthcare Public Data plugin grants direct access to official healthcare datasets such as PubMed and DailyMed.
Connecting to Epic will mean clinicians can ask specific questions about changes since a patient’s last visit, recent lab results, medication changes, specialist recommendations, and more, according to OpenAI, preventing the need to search through appointment notes and other documentation.
“ChatGPT brings together relevant information from the authorised patient record, summarises important developments, and points back to supporting chart information,” the company notes. ChatGPT can also be integrated directly into the EHR, allowing for AI-assisted workflows without leaving the patient’s chart.
The Healthcare Public Data plugin has “dedicated connectors” to nine public health sources, with OpenAI sharing hopes this will make it easier to verify information on trial eligibility criteria, medication identifiers, and relevant research.
“OpenAI partners with hundreds of physicians across 60 countries, 49 languages, and 26 medical specialties to help us define, measure, and improve health responses in ChatGPT,” says OpenAI. “To date, these physicians have reviewed more than 700,000 model responses across examples that reflect real-world healthcare questions. Their feedback improves model behavior and strengthens healthcare-specific tools.”
A video has also been posted to the OpenAI for Business LinkedIn account, demonstrating what the use of EHR integration within ChatGPT for Healthcare might look like in action.
Earlier this year, OpenAI shared plans to develop an AI “superapp”, in order to improve usability and bring together ChatGPT, Codex, browsing, and agentic capabilities into a single experience. “This is commercial scale, and it is mission scale,” it highlighted. “The fastest way to widen the benefits of AI is to put useful intelligence in people’s hands early and let that access compound globally. AI is driving productivity gains, accelerating scientific discovery, and expanding what people and organisations can build.”

An award of up to $35 million from the US Department for Health and Human Services’ rare disease AI/ML for precision integrated diagnostics programme is set to support UNC Health to build a data resource for rare disease AI. According to UNC Health, the new data resource will support clinicians and researchers identify patterns and develop research further into rare disease diagnosis and care. New and existing tools will help enable analysis of this large-scale clinical and biological data, with the ambition of promoting earlier diagnosis and treatment discovery.
AI enabled breast cancer screening is reportedly helping patients at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT), thanks to the introduction of a new scanner funded by £40,000 from the Harrogate Hospital & Community Charity. The AI enabled HER2 tissue scanning system works by capturing high resolution digital images of breast cancer tissue samples, using an AI algorithm to help pathologists assess HER2 status by detecting the presence of the HER2/neu gene that can be a cause of breast cancer, the trust shares.
TidalSense, a Cambridge-based AI respiratory diagnostics company, has shared that it has successfully raised £16 million in funding to accelerate the European and US commercialisation of its AI diagnostic device for COPD. According to the company, its N-Tidal Diagnose software, CE marked under EU MDR (Class IIa) for COPD, “uses AI-analysed tidal breathing — rather than the forced exhalation required by spirometry — to deliver a fast, non-invasive diagnosis of COPD in under five minutes, without specialist training or hospital-grade equipment”.
