You may be familiar with the NHS app (over 30 million users) or used NHS 111 online or accessed services through NHS login. We want to re-imagine personalised healthcare and wellness through the development of enhanced experiences via app, web and login with a bold aim to empower citizens through effective engagement, retention and tools. We want to enable coherent user journeys which will help improve health outcomes, improve our NHS and lighten the administration burden on our NHS staff.

This is an influential role requiring visible, persuasive and passionate leadership across a highly regulated and complex ecosystem. You will create and nurture partnerships, bringing together diverse insights from a range of ‘product partners’ be it patients, clinicians through to Ministers and the Secretary of State, balancing a broad spectrum of agendas whilst advocating for putting citizens at the heart of their health experience. You will set the Digital Citizen product strategy whilst ensuring work across the committed and passionate product and content delivery teams is aligned and producing value for users and the NHS.

About the role

The Product Director of Digital Citizen is responsible for:

  • Leading digital strategy and roadmap development, articulating strategic goals and driving outcome-focused, user-centric delivery.
  • Managing live products/services, ensuring governance, scalability, and security of flagship national offerings (NHS.UK, NHS App, NHS login).
  • Directing high-profile initiatives, engaging senior stakeholders, and managing delivery in a sensitive landscape.
  • Leading commercial planning and engagement, including supplier strategies.
  • Establishing effective governance processes to guide detailed delivery and implementation.
  • Advocating lean agile practices for cultural change and efficient digital service delivery.
  • Efficiently managing software development practices and utilizing digital assets for cross-product user journeys.

About you

Key skills and experience you’ll need to be able to demonstrate include:

  • Setting product strategy, vision and purpose for business to consumer products, with demonstrable performance outcomes linked to broader organisational goals
  • High volume, scalable mobile and web-based products and services delivery and development at scale
  • Extensive product management and user-centred design practices in large digital transformation programmes, products and services
  • Ensuring a sustainable but progressive delivery momentum across a portfolio of digital products and services,
  • Using effective real time measurements of success to drive business insights, decision making and ruthless prioritisation
  • Working at board level in a large complex organisation with demonstrable experience of resilience and in overcoming set-backs, excellent leadership and creativity demonstrated by a track record of achieving challenging objectives in complex organisations
  • Having a deep understanding of the variety of disciplines involved in digital delivery, including software development, engineering, service design, content design, product management, performance analysis and user research developed through working in fully integrated multi-disciplinary teams
  • Strategic management of large-scale procurement, supplier management and commercial supply chains
  • Leading the large-scale transformation from programme/project to product led ways of working and the supporting methodologies that drive cultural change across teams
  • Building and maintaining highly effective relationships at very senior levels and operating successfully in complex, sensitive and political stakeholder environment with competing priorities
  • Leveraging evidence-based case studies, user journey’s to set direction and planning to achieve ambitious goals and influence broader organisation strategies and priorities
