Amazon launches no programming app building platform

Amazon has launched a new tool, Amazon Honeycode, to allow anyone to build mobile and web application without programming required.

The platform has initially been made available in Oregon, USA, with more regions coming soon. It means that anyone can build a mobile or web application without the need to understand coding.

Initially the company said it is for “customers who need applications to track and manage things like process approvals, event scheduling, customer relationship management, user surveys, to-do lists”, replacing the use of spreadsheets for example.

Once built a team can perform tasks like tracking data over time, manage workflows and notifying users of changes, routing approvals, and facilitating processes.

The tool will be available for free for up to 20 users, with pricing for additional.

A CEO on twitter responded to the news and said “this very small thing, not many people will realise the importance of it. But heralding the future of digital health. Amazon will eventually build/buy a clinical data model and plug this on top. Game over for current EPRs. Said it before, still saying it.”

Larry Augustin, Vice President, Amazon Web Services “Customers have told us that the need for custom applications far outstrips the capacity of developers to create them.”

“Now with Amazon Honeycode, almost anyone can create powerful custom mobile and web applications without the need to write code.”

Brad Armstrong, VP of Business and Corporate Development, Slack, who will be one of the first to use the tool said “We’re excited about the opportunity that AmazonHoneycode creates for teams to build apps to drive and adapt to today’s ever-changing business landscape.”

“We see Amazon Honeycode as a great complement and extension to Slack and are excited about the opportunity to work together to create ways for our joint customers to work more efficiently and to do more with their data than ever before.”
