Reflecting on 2025: A year of HTN Now webinars supporting shared learning and best practice

We’re reflecting on a busy 2025 – delivering 59 hours of online shared learning and best practice, as part of the national HTN Now webinar forum. We held over 60 HTN Now webinars, each covering key topics such as EPR, virtual wards, workforce digital skills, AI, and cyber security.

We would like to say a huge thank you to the brilliant people who joined the panels and for sharing their learnings, successes and views with thousands of NHS professionals. Here, we list a few of our favourites to look back on.

AI approaches, safety, policy, regulation, and evaluation

In August, we were joined for a discussion on AI approaches, safety, policy, regulation, and evaluation, by Neill Crump, digital strategy director at Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust; Anil Mistry, AI safety lead and senior clinical scientist in AI at Guy’s and St Thomas’​ NHS Foundation Trust; and Matea Deliu, GP clinical lead and clinical lead for primary care digital delivery, South East London ICB. Our panellists discussed AI in healthcare, sharing their own learnings from recent AI strategies and projects as well as their thoughts on regulations, tackling data bias, through to safety and evaluations. EPRs, lessons learned, optimisation, opportunities and what the future of EPRs could looks like

For a recent HTN Now session on the topic of EPRs now and in the future, we were joined by digital leaders including Sally Mole, senior digital programme manager – digital portfolio delivery team at The Dudley Group; Keltie Jamieson, CHIO at Bermuda Hospitals Board; and David Newey, digital health expert and executive CDIO. We heard in depth from our panel in terms of their EPR journey, sharing their approach, examples, challenges and lessons learned. We went on to discuss the current position with EPRs, the opportunity, and the current need. Looking ahead, we discussed what the future of EPRs looks like in the short, medium and longer term. A deep dive into ambient scribe technology in primary care

For a HTN Now session back in August, we were joined by experts from across the health and care sector, including Dr Shanker Vijayadeva, GP, NHS England (London region); Rhod Joyce, deputy director of digital transformation, NHS England; Dr Dom Pimenta M.D., co-founder & chief executive officer, Tortus AI; Dr Hannah Allen, chief medical officer, Heidi Health; and Dr Andrew Whiteley, managing director, Lexacom. Our panellists discussed some of the practicalities and key considerations to take into account when it comes to using ambient scribe technology in primary care and general practice. This meant delving into the risks, evidence, compliance, and how to move forward. Catch up here.

The role of digital in supporting the primary – secondary care interface

Another HTN Now webinar looked at the role of digital in supporting the primary and secondary care interface, with our experts sharing details about their own approaches and experiences in this area, including best practices and key learnings. We also explored interoperability, collaboration between care settings and how digital can ensure patients are directed to the right place at the right time. Panellists included, Kath Potts, chief digital officer at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust and Dr Sheikh Mateen Ellahi, GP and practice partner at Elm Tree Surgery and South Stockton Primary Care Network. Innovation in a future model of community care

We were joined for a HTN Now panel discussion by Antonia Frost, CNIO at Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust; Jen Tomkinson, assistant director of primary and community care development (urgent response and acute deterioration) at NHS England (SW region); and Roisin Reade, product manager at Civica, to discuss innovation in community healthcare. The session covered how innovation supports a future model of community care, the role of digital and what needs to be the focus in order to modernise services. We also explored what good looks like, looking at short-term goals and how the recent 10 Year Health Plan will shape the future direction. Catch up here.

How digital and data are supporting population health management

For another HTN Now webinar we focused on the role of data and digital in supporting population health management (PHM). We were joined by a panel including Victoria Townshend, portfolio director (associate)with the GIRFT Elective Team; Mayur Vibhuti, CCIO and GP clinical lead for digital at Kent and Medway ICB; and Harry Thirkettle, director of health and innovation from Aire Logic. Our panellists explored and discussed approaches to PHM, successes, challenges, what works and what doesn’t, through to measuring the impact of PHM interventions. Catch up here.

Interoperability and key steps towards making progress

A HTN Now webinar on key steps towards making progress on interoperability saw us joined by a panel of experts from across the health and care sector, including Neill Crump, digital strategy director at Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust; Ananya Datta, associate director of primary care digital delivery at South East London ICS; and John Kosobucki, CEO of OX.DH. In the session, we discussed how health and care can tackle challenges around interoperability, looking at the key steps that can be taken to make progress in this area. Our expert panellists shared details about their own projects and programmes, providing insights into strategy, approaches and potential improvements that can be made. Catch up here.

HTN was joined for a webinar exploring the role of the CIO now and in the future by a panel of experts including Ravi Sahota Thandi, interim operational CIO at The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust; Kate Warriner, chief transformation and digital officer at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust and #1 in the CIO 100 rankings; and Rhian Bulmer, chief customer officer at Radar Healthcare. Our panel shared their own experiences, discussed the role of the CIO in supporting and developing digital maturity and skills, delivering 10-Year Plan priorities, and what the next 5 – 10 years will look like. Also noted were emerging technologies and opportunities, along with ways of realising digitally-enabled system working. Catch up here.

For a recent HTN Now panel discussion, we were joined by expert panellists from across the healthcare sector to debate some of the key priorities and areas for the application of digital tools in women’s healthcare, as well as barriers to tech and the future outlook for digital in this arena. Panellists included: Saima Sharif, NHS obstetrician & gynaecologist, North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust and digital/AI adopter for women’s health; Dr Nikita Kanani MBE, GP; Sally Mole, senior digital programme manager – digital portfolio delivery team at The Dudley Group; and Vicky Rothwell, lead enterprise architect, Aire Logic. How can we digitally empower patients? 

An expert panel including Tom Davis, UK country manager and medical director at Livi, Dan Bunstone, clinical director at Warrington ICB, and Ananya Datta, associate director of primary care digital delivery at South East London ICS, joined us for a HTN Now webinar exploring the role of digital in empowering patients. The discussion considered what “good” looks like for digital patient journeys, the ways digital is currently being used to empower patients, the successful use of digital tools in helping patients to take control of their own health, and key challenges around engagement, training, capacity and accessibility. EPR customisations for the frontline and supporting 10-Year Plan targets

A recent HTN Now panel discussion explored EPR customisations for the frontline and how digital transformation can support the direction set in the 10 Year Health Plan. We discussed optimisation, challenges and key learnings from success stories shared by our experts. Panellists included Doctor Stephen Jones, principal clinical psychologist at Sheffield Children’s Hospital; David Wong, associate professor of health data science and health informatics at Leeds University; Mark Simpson, digital innovation leader at Leeds Community Healthcare; and Michael Odling-Smee, CEO at Aire Innovate. We were joined for a discussion on the future of digital in supporting elective care and waitlist management by a panel including Sally Mole, senior digital programme manager – digital portfolio delivery team at The Dudley Group; Susannah Cleary, assistant director of operations and delivery for elective care at NHS England; and Barry Mulholland, CEO and founder of MBI Health. The session focused on the role of digital in supporting elective care and waitlist management, taking point of recent plans, and looking ahead at the potential for data and digital to further enhance elective care and waitlist management in the future.
