The NHSX Analytics Unit has launched a PhD internship scheme.
The programme focuses on the areas of innovation and analytics in health, aiming to ‘connect NHS real data with academic thought and research’ and allow ‘insights to be acted upon in a real-life setting’.
It’s open to PhD students working in quantitative disciplines, who also want to gain experience in ‘creating solutions within health and care settings’.
The short-term PhD internships will provide opportunities for students and their universities, including access to NHS data and the chance to work in an industrial setting while supporting ‘real-time research analytics’.
Lasting between three and six months, projects will end with the submission of a final report, suitable for publication, and presentations of results to NHSX.
The scheme includes an applicant wage equivalent to NHS Band 6, spine point 1 and there will also be direct payments of £5,000 to the university of any successful applicant, for the institutions’ continued student support and supervision.
Applications for the scheme open on 1 February 2021 and interested parties can apply via NHS jobs before the closing date of 5 March.
A list of projects, which continues to be added to, includes themes and topics such as natural language processing, synthetic data, usage of modern data formats, machine learning, AI safety and image identification.
