The Eastern Academic Health Science Network is launching a series of podcasts that explore innovative ways of managing primary care under pressure.
Each episode aims to uncover the secrets of successful primary care teams working in the NHS today. The Primary Care Talks host, Dr Hasan Chowhan, interviews fellow GPs to find out about some of the smartest approaches to improving efficiency and productivity, and driving the future of health by integrating genomics into primary care.
Dr Chowhan, primary care lead for the Eastern AHSN, is a GP principal in Colchester, Chair of NHS North East Essex Clinical Commissioning Group “Our GPs and their teams are doing amazing things under immense pressure, many colleagues have stressed to me the importance of finding easy and accessible ways to share our best ideas. That is why we have created the Primary Care Talks podcasts. Each episode is between 20-30 minutes long so it’s ideal for listening to on a commute.”
In episode one, Dr Chowhan meets Dr Neil Modha from Thistlemoor Medical Practice in Peterborough. Neil outlines how he has cleverly and carefully managed caring for a community where 85% of patients do not have English as a first language, and many struggle with communicating about their health and wellbeing. His solution offers a step change in care for patients as well as alleviating pressure on his team.
Janet Rutherford, Associate GP Dean for Suffolk, North EastEssex and Bedfordshire at Health Education England “We are delighted to see the launch of these podcasts. Whilst we all know that general practice is currently under considerable strain, there is also a lot of innovative work going on, both in our region and nationally, that will help us meet these challenges. It is crucial that we share information about this work far and wide so that we all have the chance to learn about it, adapt it to our local circumstances and then benefit from it. These podcasts will help spread the message and stimulate positive change.”
Victoria Corbishley, Director of Transformation at the Eastern AHSN “The phrase ‘If general practice fails, the whole NHS fails’ has been widely used in recent times. Primary Care Talks provides an interesting, fun and convenient way to share important learning between health and care professionals. Each episode focuses on innovative ways to make their working lives easier, and patient services stronger for the future. Busy people can download and listen when it suits them. We hope that this series will inspire listeners, help to spread best practice and encourage necessary change.”
Primary Care Talks podcasts are published monthly, available to download via the Eastern AHSN website and will also shortly be available on iTunes.
