Case Study: NHS Trust saves hundreds of hours with latest mortality platform and dashboard

Draper & Dash have worked in partnership with NHS trusts, to develop and release a Clinical Outcome Review System (CORS) platform to bring a digital answer to the very manual and resource heavy mortality review processes. The CORS system encompasses recommendations from the Learning from Death initiative, as well as the most recent Medical Examiner and SJR mandates, in one streamlined and easy to use platform.

Outcomes

Within 6 months of actively using Draper & Dash’s Clinical Outcome Review System (CORS), their pilot partner saw a reduction of 27 consultant reviews per month. This cost improvement of reducing consultant reviews by 324 a year is a positive result but the efficiencies in reviewing deaths and reporting and extracting learning from the system was the true highlight.

Following Clinical User testing, D&D have received overwhelmingly positive responses, speaking to not only the improved and more streamlined internal review processes, but the effect the CORS has had in creating reproducible knowledge that staff can use pre-emptively in their patient care.

The CORS works to better identify variations in outcomes and provide a retrospective view on a patient’s care, for clinicians to then make necessary changes or take appropriate action in the care of another patient to improve their outcome.

The mortality review system’s pilot trust is expecting to see 250+ hours saved not only for clinicians and consultants completing the review but also with the clinical governance and information teams.

Key process outcomes that have supported these results are:

  • 72% of Death certificate reviews completed within 72 hours of death, 24% in the 1st24hrs
  • 76% of ME reviews completed within 72 hours of death, 26% in the 1st24hrs
  • 83% of SJR are identified within 72 hours of death
  • 44% of SJR are completed within 31 days of death

Many Trusts have digital solutions for elements of the mortality review process they often sit across separate platforms, tools or applications and whether you need to review different clinical outcomes or to adhere to different national mandates or simply access data and deliver reports this is often still done manual and consumes hours of resources.

Draper & Dash believe that equipping hospitals and health systems with the tools to properly review clinical processes and outcomes is key to ensuring the same mistakes are not made again, and ultimately works to provide better patient care at all points in the patient journey.

To support this Draper & Dash are offering free implementation to organisations before April.
