UNICEF and Microsoft team-up for global open source case management tool

UNICEF and Microsoft have been developing a new tool, Primero X, to support social service providers coordinate support to vulnerable children.

The web application is currently being piloted in Ghana, with an aim to roll-out to other countries in 2022.

The first version of the software is being used in 29 countries, such as Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Mali, Uganda and Columbia. It provides these nations with tools for data collection for case management, incident management, and documenting.

It offers support on a range of protection programmes, including unaccompanied and separated children, psychosocial support, children in alternative care, and gender-based violence in emergencies.

Charlotte Petri Gornitzka, UNICEF Deputy Executive Director, said: “Social workers offer a lifeline to vulnerable children, especially during times of crisis and upheaval. COVID-19 is undermining the ability of these essential workers to do their jobs at the same time as needs are increasing. The partnership between UNICEF and Microsoft will help strengthen the Primero platform and scale it up to benefit millions of children and young people, both now and in the future. Primero is an example of how UNICEF partners with business — based on a shared-value approach, where producing social value and addressing challenges also makes business sense.”
