West Yorkshire ICS to expand virtual wards

West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership has opened a tender opportunity to expand its remote monitoring programmes across the region.

Virtual wards are currently in place across Leeds, Calderdale, Kirklees, Wakefield, Bradford District and Craven, however the ICS “plans to expand the bed base” and “deliver both step-up and step-down pathways that are not currently enable.” The tender also adds the requirement to “introduce mental health input to enhance the frailty pathway.”

Across Leeds, the plans state to expand their virtual ward pathways and increase capacity through the implementation of a new remote monitoring virtual ward hub – which will primarily provide step-down pathways to support patients. Specialties will include frailty, respiratory, surgery and cardiac heart failure.

For Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield (CKW), it states a desire to expand their current virtual ward for frailty and offer the service from the age of 65; currently this service is for adult patients aged over 75 only. The tender adds that CKW will open respiratory beds for patients aged 16+ with chronic respiratory disease, exasperation and COPD. There is potential for additional care pathways to be included such as cardiology, end of life care and diabetes management.

In Bradford District and Craven, there are currently virtual wards operating for frailty and multi-specialty pathways, with the tender aiming to expand capacity and increase the service across multi-specialty pathways. These pathways include end of life and palliative care, general surgery, cardiology, diabetes, nephrology and orthopaedics.

Valued at around £300k, the tender aims to procure a single supplier to deliver the programme. More information can be found here.
