Digital Health and Care Wales explores digital triage primary care solution procurement

Digital Health and Care Wales (DHCW) has opened an opportunity looking to gather more information from potential suppliers to offer a digital triage primary care solution.

According to the general medical services team at DHCW, the solution should support patient triage, appointment management, patient communication and business intelligence, in order to meet the needs of a general practice. They are currently undertaking an information gathering exercise to find out which solutions are available and inform their decision-making process for potential procurement in the future.

The notice outlines a 2-year duration for the contract, with an estimated value of up to £500k. Interested suppliers have been asked to confirm their interest in participating by completing a request for information document by 12pm on Friday 29 August 2025.

This follows several other market engagements recently published by DHCW. In July, they posted an opportunity for a cloud-based electronic referral solution for eye care with a total value of £197,000 and in May, they opened a market engagement exercise for an integrated care record to be used across NHS Wales.

Digital triage: the wider trend

For a recent HTN Now session, we held a webinar on the topic of harnessing data for total triage in primary care. Our panellists shared details on current uses of data for total triage, discussing key successes, challenges, learnings, and best practice. Experts included Ananya Datta, associate director of primary care digital delivery at South East London ICB; Asad Ashraf, GP and digital clinical lead at North East London ICB; and Devin Gray, GP and clinical lead for digital transformation at Wandsworth GP Federation.

In March, NHS Lanarkshire planned to launch a digital check-in and triage system for patients arriving at its accident and emergency department, helping them gather key patient information at the point of arrival. The initial roll-out was set to take place at University Hospital Monklands, followed by a phased roll-out to University Hospital Wishaw and University Hospital Hairmyres.

Recent board papers from Mid and South Essex ICB highlighted the impact of digital tools and data in supporting a number of different projects and priorities, including total triage, whole system stewardship, modern general practice, emergency preparedness and resilience and response.
